Daughter of Poseidon with purple hair, Evadne is the wife of Epytos, king of Phesane in Arcadia. Beloved of Apollo, she cannot hide her pregnancy from her husband, who goes to Delphi to ask the oracle about the future of the unborn child. During his absence, Evadne went to the banks of the Alpheus where, assisted by Ilithyie, goddess of childbirth sent by Apollo, she gave birth to Iamos. The three Moirai, also present at the request of the god, each give the child a gift. Afraid of the birth of an illegitimate son, Evadne exposes the child, who is fed honey by two snakes sent by the gods.
At Delphi, Epytos learned that Apollo was the father. He returns to Arcadia and claims the child who has just been born, but the entourage of Evadne denies the birth. Iamos remained hidden in a grove near the Alpheus, among the rushes and violets from which it takes its name.
