The term Wega (now Vega) is derived from a transliteration of the Arabic word “waqi” meaning “falling”, by the phrase “an-nasr al-wāqi ‘”, which translates, according to the sources as “the falling eagle”, or “the diving vulture”. The constellation represents a vulture in ancient Egypt and an eagle or a vulture in ancient India.
Medieval astrologers categorized Vega among about fifteen stars linked to magical properties, with each of which were associated a plant and a gemstone. Thus, Vega was associated with chrysolite and winter savory.
