The name “Betelgeuse” comes from yad al-jawzā, a term of pre-Islamic Arabic origin that means “the hand of al-jawzā”. The origin of al-Jawza’, which precedes the Arabic translation of Greek works, is ancient and its meaning is obscure. The term refers to a female character and probably derives from a root meaning “in the middle”: it could have designated in ancient Arabia a constellation that covered the stars of present-day Orion, and refer to the central position of it on the celestial vault.
