Istros, river “with beautiful running waters” is a lower course of the current Danube. It is through the latter two that the Argonauts, returning with the Golden Fleece, reach the Adriatic where Zeus informs them that they must be purified by Circe from the death of Apsyrtus. They thus ascend the Eridanus and, through the Rhodanus, reach the Ligurian coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea as far as the island of Aeaea. Istros is credited with the authorship of Helorus and Actaeus.
