In ancient times, Alpheus was worshipped by the Eleans as a river god. Pausanias indicates that the Alpheus forms the boundary between the lands of the Lacedaemonians and that of Tégée; it takes its source at Philaca; at a short distance from there, it receives the waters of a large number of fountains, but which are not considerable: this is what made this place give the name of Symbola.
